ABSTRACT

This paper aims to investigate the impact of the introduction of the long-haul low cost carrier in the North Atlantic market to present the competitive situation before the COVID-19. There are a number of challenges in estimating the incremental effect of LH LCC. Therefore, several strategies were taken. Firstly, a difference in differences estimation and propensity score matched methods were employed using six major routes in the North Atlantic market with IATA's ticket sale data from January 2015 to December 2019; a granulated data to present the characteristics of flight and economy class fares. The outcomes indicate that a 17.2-20.6% fare reduction in average on the routes where Norwegian operated during 2015 and 2019 after Norwegian's entry, compared to what it would have happened if they didn't operate. It implies the LH LCC entry lowered fares significantly, and the level of fare competition in the North Atlantic market before the COVID-19 was high. In addition, a certain level of viability as an LH LCC has been implicated. This output can be used for the airline's strategic implication and the policy proposition, particularly when LCC expands the longer routes after the COVID recovery. Frequent and specific (detailed) assessments by market and period are imperative.

ABSTRACT

This study empirically examined the effect of a carbon trading pilot market on export green-sophistication of Chinese listed enterprises by adopting a difference-in-difference method. Findings show that a carbon trading pilot market can improve enterprises’ export green-sophistication after using robustness tests to overcome endogeneity. The impact mechanism test shows that a carbon trading pilot market can improve export green-sophistication by increasing green technology innovation. Further research on the system design of carbon trading pilot markets shows that the greater the total carbon quota allocation, the larger the reduction in the trading volume of Chinese certified emissions. Furthermore, the weaker the punishment for an enterprise’s default in the pilot areas, the less favorable it is for enterprises to improve their export green-sophistication. Compared with the grandfather and historical intensity methods, benchmarking used in the allocation of carbon quotas is conducive to the improvement of the export green-sophistication of enterprises.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: In response to the transmission of COVID-19, China adopted the "national multidisciplinary healthcare assistance". This commentary evaluates whether it is effective and sustainable to contain the COVID-19. METHODS: We adopted the "Difference-in-difference Method" to investigate whether the national multidisciplinary healthcare assistance policy could provide significant benefits in areas affected by COVID-19 by increasing their recovery rates. A total of 578 panel data samples were taken from the Ministry of Health in China. RESULTS: We observed that the number of recovered cases per day increased by 39.36 as a result of this policy. GDP per capita and land area were significantly negatively correlated with the number of recovered cases while the resident population was significantly positively correlated with it. CONCLUSION: The national multidisciplinary healthcare assistance was an effective intervention to reduce the burden of COVID-19 and ease pressure on the healthcare system in Hubei and China. To quickly formulate and promulgate effective response policies for emergent public health crises, the national government should introduce the concept of emergency management into policy agendas and highlight the importance of "problem streams".
